Tips for selling to a dealer

    Finding a car dealer

Motorway can place your car in front of thousands of professional car dealers, so you’ll get their best price. There are other ways to sell your car to a dealer:

    • Instant car-buying sites – these are normally very quick, but can mean lower prices.
    • Car classified ad sites – these can require  a lot of time and admin profiling and then selling your car.
    • Driving to a dealership – it can be hard to negotiate a good price when talking with one dealership at a time, whether you sell or part-exchange.

At Motorway, we’re constantly working to build the best way for people to sell their cars, straight to verified dealers, from their phone.

There are a few things to bear in mind when selling your car to a dealership:

    • Appearances count – what’s under the hood is important too, but you should get your car looking its best.
    • Take quality photos – that means no blurry, rainy day shots, but no lens flare from overly sunny days either.
    • Manage expectations – your car may look great and drive better but some. things are inescapable, like age and its impact on car depreciation.
    • Paperwork – You’ll also want to make sure your paperwork is in order. Here’s what documents you need to sell your car.

Commonly asked questions about selling your car to a dealer

Is it better to sell my car to a dealer?

Selling your car to a dealer can be easier than finding a private buyer, as there is less chance of time wasters — you ask a dealer for a price, they offer one, you agree (or not) and that’s it. The downside to this convenience is that your final price might be lower than you hoped.

With Motorway, we aim to get you your best offer. By working with 5,000+ verified dealers, we place your car in front of thousands of prospective buyers, no driving from dealership to dealership, and no extra admin. You can agree on a sale as fast as 24 hours, all online and completely free

It’s completely free and you’re never obligated to sell if you don’t want to.

What documents do I need to sell my car?

You’ll need the following in order to sell your car to a dealer (or anyone else):

    • V5C/ Logbook
    • Service history
    • Proof of purchase
    • MOT certificates

If you bought your car on finance like PCP you’ll also need a Finance Settlement letter which will allow you to pay off what you still owe on the vehicle, or have a car dealer settle for you once you agree on a sale. You cannot legally sell a car on finance without letting the buyer know you have finance owed on it.
