Motorway announces partnership with Empathy to offer support during bereavement sales

Motorway is excited to announce a new partnership with Empathy, a leading tech-enabled bereavement support platform, offering integrated support for those selling a car following a loss.

Losing a loved one is one of life’s most painful moments, but the emotional burden is just one aspect of grief. From overseeing a deceased estate to managing a loved one’s possessions, the practical responsibilities involve a daunting amount of paperwork and admin. Our research* shows the isolating reality of handling a loved one’s affairs after bereavement, with nearly half (48%) having never been offered administrative support when dealing with a bereavement, despite it being something that would significantly help those coping with loss (89%).

In the days following loss, many people are expected to make complex decisions while still processing the emotional toll. In fact, three quarters (75%) say the stress of practical admin makes it harder to even begin processing their grief, while nearly a third (31%) are completely unprepared to handle the practical tasks that follow a bereavement.

One of the most complicated responsibilities is deciding what to do with a loved one’s car, with Brits admitting they’d have no idea where to begin (47%) or what documents are required (46%). The majority (61%) are also worried about making a mistake during the process.

Motorway’s partnership with Empathy builds on our existing dedicated Bereavement Team, which provides specialist support for executors and family members selling a vehicle following a bereavement. Our team helps customers understand documentation requirements, navigate each step at their own pace, and feel supported throughout what is often an emotionally difficult process, while ensuring the best possible sale outcome for the vehicle.

Tom Leathes, CEO and Co-founder of Motorway, said: “Selling a car after losing someone you love is one of the hardest things our customers go through. No one should have to figure out V5C transfers and probate on their own while they’re grieving. We set up our bereavement team because we felt these customers deserved something better than a standard process. This new partnership with Empathy lets us go further, giving families proper support beyond selling their car, with probate, estate admin, and the emotional side of things, too.”

Through the partnership, Motorway customers will gain access to Empathy’s Loss Support Product. From funeral planning to estate tasks and emotional support, Empathy offers on-demand tools and guidance to help individuals and families navigate grief.

Clare Dodd, UK General Manager at Empathy, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Motorway to ensure bereaved customers get the support they deserve. Motorway’s decision to extend its bereavement pathway through Empathy reflects a shared belief that families should be met with clarity, compassion and care during life’s hardest transitions.”To find out more about selling a loved one’s car and the support available through Motorway’s partnership with Empathy, visit our bereavement hub, here: https://motorway.co.uk/sell-my-car/bereavement
