INTRODUCTION
This policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies at Motorway – what they do, why we use them, and how you can manage your choices. It works alongside our Privacy Policy which explains more fully how we look after your personal data.

This policy covers the Motorway website, www.motorway.co.uk (the “Website”). Consent for cookies and similar technologies in our mobile apps is managed separately.
WHAT ARE COOKIES AND SIMILAR TECHNOLOGIES?
At its simplest, a cookie is a small file that a website stores on your computer so it can recognise you when you return to the website and remember something about you at a later date.
We also use a few similar technologies that do much the same job, including pixels and tags, software development kits (SDKs), local storage and device fingerprinting. In this policy, when we refer to “cookies” we mean all of these.
In this policy:
- first-party technologies are set by Motorway; and
- third-party technologies are set by other organisations whose services we use.
Technologies may be session-based (deleted when you close your browser) or persistent (remaining on your device until they expire or you delete them).
WHAT KIND OF COOKIES DOES MOTORWAY USE?
We group the cookies that we use into the following categories:
1. Strictly necessary: These keep the Website running and let us provide what you have asked for, including signing you in, keeping things secure, preventing fraud and spotting errors. They are always on and do not need your consent.
2. Analytics / performance: Several of these run in an anonymised or aggregated mode, and some are used without consent under the exception described below. You can turn analytics cookies on or off at any time using the toggles at the top of this policy.
3. Advertising / marketing: We only use these if you accept cookies, and we will not set them if you choose “Reject All”.

HOW WE OBTAIN AND MANAGE YOUR CONSENT
Our cookie banner gives you an “Accept All” and “Reject All” choice. You can also turn analytics and marketing cookies on or off at any time using the toggles above.
Our legal basis for storing or accessing information on your device is your consent under regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (“PECR“), except where an exception applies (see “Strictly necessary and exempt technologies” below).
Where we process personal data collected through these technologies, our lawful basis under the UK GDPR is:
- consent – for advertising and marketing cookies, and for any analytics cookies you have switched on;
- legitimate interests – for strictly necessary and functional cookies (such as error and fault logging), and for the analytics cookies we use under the exception in the next paragraph (our legitimate interest being to keep the Website secure and working properly, and to understand and improve how it is used); and
- legal obligation and/or performance of a contract – for identity verification, anti-money laundering and fraud-prevention cookies (such as Incode).
STRICTLY NECESSARY AND EXEMPT TECHNOLOGIES
Strictly necessary technologies are used without consent because the Website would not work properly without them – this includes keeping the Website secure and preventing or detecting fraud and technical faults.
We also rely on the statutory exception that permits certain analytics technologies to be used solely to collect statistical information about how the Website is used, with the aim of improving it. Where we rely on this exception, we give you a simple, free way to object by turning analytics off.
HOW TO CHANGE OR WITHDRAW YOUR CHOICES
You can change or withdraw your consent via the toggles at the top of this page, but you may also control cookies through your browser settings. This is a supplementary route only and may affect how the Website works.
Withdrawing your consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing we carried out before you withdrew it.
THIRD-PARTY TECHNOLOGIES
Some technologies are set by third parties whose services we use, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Snowplow, Zendesk and others as identified in the cookie table above. These third parties may use the information they collect for their own purposes, which are governed by their own privacy and cookie notices rather than this policy.
INTERNATIONAL DATA TRANSFERS
Some third-party providers may transfer personal data outside the United Kingdom. Where they do, we ensure that an appropriate safeguard is in place via regulation (e.g. UK adequacy regulations) or contractual measures (e.g. Data Transfer Agreement).
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We review this policy regularly and may update it from time to time. Where changes are material, we will notify you and we record which version of this policy you last saw so we can prompt you when it changes. The date at the top of this policy shows when it was last updated.
