Frequently asked questions about selling with Motorway

How do you value my car? Is it accurate?

Enter your reg to get an instant valuation for your vehicle. This valuation is designed to be as accurate as possible and is based on the latest data from thousands of successful sales on Motorway. Our pricing updates in real-time so your estimated sale price will be based on recent offers for vehicles just like yours.

Since we don’t know a lot about your car at this point, the estimated sale price can change once we know about its specification, condition and service history.

What if the dealer tries to haggle or drop the price?

The offer you receive for your car will be based on the information shared on your profile. If the details you’ve given are accurate, our trusted dealers are not permitted to renegotiate when they arrive to collect your vehicle. They should simply inspect the vehicle, check its condition, and then arrange to transfer the agreed sale price to your bank account.

If your vehicle has been inaccurately described and some additional faults or defects have not been outlined in your vehicle’s profile, the dealer may choose to withdraw their offer or make a revised offer for the vehicle. If the revised offer proves unacceptable to you, we advise you to contact us so we can help you arrive at a suitable outcome.

To ensure fairness, dealers are obligated to provide photos to us of any undeclared damage to substantiate any price reductions.

Is selling through Motorway really free for me?

Yes! Selling your vehicle with Motorway is completely free. Dealers pay to buy and collect your vehicle, meaning you don’t have to pay a penny.

How long does the whole process take?

From getting your free, instant valuation to approving an offer generally takes around two to seven days, though it can be completed in as little as 24 hours. This depends on how long it takes you to profile your car, which includes taking photos and gathering documentation such as your MOT certificate (with at least two weeks remaining in its validity) and V5C logbook.

You can agree to the timings of collection and payment with your buying dealer once the sale has been completed. Collection generally happens within a week to ten days of the sale being agreed. Payment will be made straight into your bank account upon collection of the vehicle.

Why do I need to take photos of my vehicle?

High-quality photos are key to getting the highest possible price from our dealers, allowing them to see the condition of the vehicle and any issues or imperfections. We price your car using the photos you provide, so the dealer needs to be able to see the car in full prior to making their best offer. Accurate photos of the whole of your vehicle will increase demand for it, make it more attractive to dealers, and help avoid any issues upon collection.

We provide a link to guide you through taking the specific set of photos and angles we need, to ensure we can get you the best price possible.

Can I sell a car with outstanding finance on Motorway?

Yes! You’ll need to request a settlement letter from your lending company, which will show the remaining settlement figure along with other important information about ending your finance agreement early, such as any fees you have to pay.

Once you’ve sold your car with Motorway, your winning dealer will clear the existing finance directly with your lender. Any surplus goes straight into your bank account. All that’s left to do is organise a collection at a time and place that suits you.

The car is legally owned by the finance company until the loan is fully repaid, so selling it privately (i.e. not with Motorway) without settling the finance is illegal and could be considered fraud.

What documents do I need to sell my car?

To sell your vehicle on Motorway, you’ll need to share a selection of documents to make sure that the sale of your car is legal, and to prove your identity. This includes the car’s service history, the V5C logbook, your current driving licence, and a finance settlement letter if you’re selling a car with outstanding finance. You’ll also need to provide your bank details so you can get your well deserved funds.

    Who is buying my car?

Motorway is an online marketplace, connecting people selling their car directly with our network of more than 7,500 verified car dealers. We match each seller on our platform with the dealer who most wants to buy their car. When you enter your car in our daily online auction, the dealers compete to give you their best price. At the end of the sale, we send you the highest offer received, and facilitate the sale of your car to that dealer.

We carry out due diligence checks on all buyers to ensure they are legitimate, established and reputable UK vehicle retailers. During their use of the platform, buying is monitored internally by our Dealership Account Team to ensure the integrity of sales. Any dealer who breaches our rules may have action taken against their account or face removal from the platform.

What happens on the day of collection?

When collecting your car, dealers will check it matches the details and photos you’ve shared. It usually takes a quick look over the bodywork, interior, and general mechanics. It may involve a short test drive, too.

Once the dealer is happy that the car is as described, they’ll make the payment to yourself and/or your finance company. They’ll sign over the paperwork and take the car away.
