Swap your wheels, from car to bike!

Being a student is hard enough, without having to worry about your finances. Whether it’s stretching your student loan or getting a part-time job – when you’re at uni, every penny counts.

But have you ever thought about how much money your car might be sitting on? If your wheels are collecting dust while you’re at uni, now’s the time to sell. In fact, until the end of October Motorway is offering a deal that’ll make you want to pedal instead of pump petrol.

Our latest research shows that nearly 50% of students have thought about selling their cars recently. Their top reasons? Cars are expensive to run, they’re often not needed when at uni, and students could do with an extra cash boost.

But here’s the kicker: while so many students are eager to sell, nearly 87% don’t know the true value of their car. That’s where Motorway comes in. Our three-step process is simple, fast, and helps you unlock your car’s full value. Plus, on average sellers make £1,600 more with Motorway compared to part-exchanging. That’s a lot of takeaways or nights out!

The 50% Off Bike Offer: How It Works

Say goodbye to your car and hello to two wheels! We know how expensive running a car can be once you factor in maintenance, insurance, and even parking fines (we see you, London students) so, we’re making it easy to swap your car for something a little more student-friendly. When you sell your car on Motorway, you’ll get 50% off a bike of your choice!*

    Here’s how it works:

    • Sell your car on Motorway
    • Send proof of sale, a picture of your student ID, and a link to your chosen bike (from a supplied list of retailers, see T&Cs below) to motorway@wearetheromans.com
    • We’ll then send you a gift voucher covering 50% off the cost of the bike, up to the value of £250
    • Boom! You’re making AND saving money, getting fit, and doing your bit for the planet, all in one go. Top of the class!

    Wondering about other student-savvy tips?

Olamide ‘Ola’ Majekodunmi is a financial expert and founder of All Things Money, an online platform providing young adults with valuable financial tools. She is dedicated to helping young adults navigate the challenges of managing finances and supporting them with resources on financial education. Understanding how tough student life can be, Ola has partnered with Motorway to help students save money by providing top tips on how to best manage their finances and how they can top up their bank with some handy tricks.

    1. Open a student bank account

When you’re at university, opening a student bank account is a no-brainer. With endless benefits compared to a standard bank account, a student account gives you more flexibility while you figure out your finances away from home. With perks including an interest-free overdraft (make sure you use it wisely!), and incentives such as cash back offers on a number of supermarkets, retail stores and restaurants – a student account is a great way to stretch your money on your daily expenses. Banks also tend to be more lenient with student accounts, offering tailored support and flexibility with any repayments. 1. Create a budget – that works for you!

It sounds simple, but this one’s important. Working out just how much you can (and can’t) afford to spend will set you up on the right track, and a realistic budget can help prevent you from blowing your student loan in the first few weeks. If you’re new to budgeting, try the 50/30/20 method – allocating 50% of your money towards your ‘needs’ (such as food and housing), 30% of your finances towards your ‘wants’ (such as going out with friends or a new purchase for your wardrobe), and 20% of your finances towards saving or investing for the long-term. And if creating a budget is all too much, there are plenty of apps that do the hard work for you. A win-win!

    1. Find creative ways to boost your savings

Starting the term with a pot of savings can give you a great buffer as you learn how to budget. If you have old textbooks, clothes, or other things you no longer need, selling them can be a great way to declutter before moving into your new place, while also giving your bank balance a boost. If you’re new to saving, start by putting away small amounts first, and as you can afford more, gradually increase how much you add in. If you want to generate a bigger lump sum, consider selling bigger ticket items, such as your car. New research from Motorway found that 37% of students considered doing so in order to pocket some extra cash – but 87% don’t know how much their wheels are worth. It’s a great idea to shop around for the best deal on your car via online platform, Motorway, which can earn you as much as £1,600 more on your car, compared to part-exchanging for a new one.

    1. Take advantage of student discounts

Being money-savvy doesn’t have to be boring, or mean you can’t spend at all. One of the biggest perks of being a student is the access to many discounts and deals that can help you save on things you enjoy. Sites like UNiDAYS and Student Beans, offer discounts on hundreds of retailers across food, shopping and experiences, so make sure you sign up and check out what’s on offer.

    1. Save on transport with railcards, bus passes or a new set of two wheels

Most universities are set up with great transport links, making trains and buses a great way to get around. As a plus, most transport networks offer great deals on student passes or discounts on Railcards, which can save you plenty of fares in the long run. And if you don’t live on a bus route or are far from a train station, consider swapping your four wheels for two and cycle instead. Students can take advantage of Motorway’s Swap Your Wheels discount, by selling their car on the platform to receive 50% off a new bike of their choice*. Making these small changes will make a huge difference over the course of the year, while doing your bit for the planet too.
