Motorway Pay: getting payment for your car

Most sales on Motorway use Motorway Pay – our own secure, fast payment service built specifically for car sales. Your money’s in safe hands. Motorway Pay is backed by Modulr Finance, a fully FCA-regulated payment provider, and has been live since May 2023.
It’s a fast payment that’s sent to your account in seconds once your sale is confirmed – in most cases, before your car leaves your driveway.

What Motorway Pay actually does
Motorway Pay is a payment option available to dealers on the platform. Because payments happen within Motorway Pay, we can track the payment journey from start to finish and support with any payment queries along the way. It also means outstanding finance and negative equity can be handled as part of the same transaction. And because payments are processed through FCA-regulated Modulr Finance, which meets UK regulatory standards, sellers have a secure, regulated way to get paid.
Once your car is inspected, payment will be sent to you – usually before your car is driven away.
Got finance on your car? Sorted.
If there’s outstanding finance on your car, Motorway Pay handles it in the same transaction. It clears what you owe directly with your lender – negative equity included – so you don’t need to coordinate separately.
One sale, one payment, everything settled.
Selling to verified dealers

When you sell through Motorway, you’re selling to a verified dealer from our nationwide network. Motorway Pay is only available to verified dealers.
Before a dealer can buy cars on Motorway, we carry out checks to make sure they meet our standards. That includes verifying their business, trading history, customer reviews, online presence and physical trading premises. We also check that they’re a registered UK business and meet our eligibility requirements before they can join the platform.
And that’s not all. Our dedicated Dealer Governance team continues to monitor dealer performance across the platform to help ensure sellers get a great experience. When standards aren’t met, dealers will be suspended or removed. You can find out about our dealer verification process here.
So when it’s time to hand over your keys, you know the dealer buying your car has already been checked by Motorway.
Trusted at scale
We’ve processed over £10bn in payments and settled £2.2bn of outstanding car finance with Motorway Pay. Most sales on Motorway now use Motorway Pay, with more dealers choosing it every day.
When the moment comes, you’ll know the money is safe – and on its way.
